Azwood Energy's Stories

Wood Fuels in the Top of the South
Schools and businesses in the Top of the South are increasingly making the environmentally-conscious choice to transition from fossil fuels to using sustainable, clean wood energy. In doing so, they are reducing harmful greenhouse gas emissions, improving our air quality and saving money. Click here for more details

Think You Know What Clean Energy Is?
MBIE has released figures which illustrate wood fuel is the cleanest energy consumed for process heat in New Zealand, by a huge margin. The data indicates that replacing fossil fuels with wood energy could drastically reduce greenhouse gas emissions, while it lists electricity as the third largest emitter of GHGs. So why is the government incentivising electricity through capital funding for projects, while wood fuel is not being robustly promoted? Click here for more details

Reasons to Fuel Switch to Wood Energy
Switching from fossil fuels to wood energy is the forward-thinking choice. Read our five top reasons.

New Zealand's Air: Why We Shouldn't 'Breathe Easy'
Emissions from home heating accounted for about 25% of larger particulate matter and a third of finer particulates recorded in 2015. Measurements Show that a majority of sites tested, (30 out of 51) showed pollution exceeding the National Environmental Standards or Air Quality at least once in the last 3 years. This occurs mostly when home-heating emissions are high in the cooler months and weather conditions are favourable for the build-up of pollutantsClick here for more details

Renewable Energy Futures: Biomass & Electricity
The utilisation of woody biomass as a fuel source for industrial processing will be vital to meeting New Zealand’s emissions targets, according to a local energy expert. Dr Martin Atkins, Senior Research Fellow with Waikato University’s Energy Research Group, has advised some of New Zealand’s most iconic companies on their path towards lower emissions, from dairy giant, Fonterra, to pulp and paper processor, Oji. Wood Residues Circular Economy
Azwood Energy is cleaning up forestry slash and using it as a low-emission energy source to power industry and heat New Zealanders. The residues are then used to give back to the land – all helping to supercharge the New Zealand economy, while creating an alternative to fossil fuels.  Click here for more details

Low Emissions Report - Executive Summary
The Commission found that early action on key policy reforms is needed if New Zealand is to achieve its emissions‑reduction goals. Amongst the numerous changes that will be required across the economy – some disruptive, some less obvious – three particular shifts must happen for New Zealand to achieve its low-emissions goals.  Click here for more details

Woody Biomass - the Obvious Solution
One perplexing question arising in the wake of the release of the NZ Productivity Commission’s low-emission economy report, is why has the Government not realised that lowering emissions and the One Billion Trees Programme have one thing in common - woody biomass.  Click here for more details

Biomass the Big Winner – Productivity Commission Low-Emission Economy Report
Woody biomass was the big winner when the final Productivity Commission Report on a Low-emissions Economy was released last week. In the draft report, due to misinformation, biomass was and had its carbon neutrality called into question by fossil fuel interest groups. However, following a landslide of submissions, led by Azwood Energy, biomass subsequently received widespread support from industry and academia. Click here for more details

Otago Set To Lead New Zealand In Renewable Wood Energy
A recent report on wood energy has identified a means to reduce carbon emissions in Otago equivalent to removing 237,000 cars from the road. A committee will be formed shortly in Otago as the region looks to make resourceful decisions and increase the use of carbon neutral wood biomass as a source of energyClick here for more details.

How-to Guide: Choosing a Pellet Fire
Are you building a new home? At Azwood Energy, we understand it can be a stressful time with numerous decisions to be made, decisions that you will have to live with into the future. Your choice of home heating, particularly, can impact your on-going costs considerably. Click here for more details.

Carbon Kiwis Beat Firewood Shortage with Azwood Pellets
Recent news stories have highlighted the nationwide shortage of firewood, with regions such as Christchurch, Taranaki, Bay of Plenty and Wellington being particularly hard hit. Click here for more details.

Carbon Neutral Bio-mass
It's very simple to understand that coal, gas and diesel are high-carbon emitting pollutants - but why is forest biomass used to produce wood energy considered carbon neutral. Click here for more details.

The Launch of Eco Pellets
Currently, the only way to purchase pellet fuel (a natural, low emission product) is in large plastic bags that many councils won’t accept in a recycling bin. With the bags from all pellet producers potentially totalling 1 million large bags per year – Azwood Energy moved to reduce the environmental impact by giving customers a recyclable, biodegradable option. Click here for more details.

The Hard Truth of Soft Plastics
Recently at Azwood Energy, we received feedback from some of our pellet fuel customers enquiring whether their wood fuel pellet bags were recyclable. This prompted Azwood to look into this issue furtherClick here for more details.
